Special Supplement: Banner regions look to soar on rising Ordos business breeze[2008/08/011]

As Ordos has outlines ambitious plans to become an industrial powerhouse in Inner Mongolia, all banners - county-sized administrations - and districts in the city have mapped out blueprints to suit their own characteristics.

  Dalate banner

Dalate plans to rely on its rich coal resources to become an important energy and coal-based chemical center in Ordos.

The banner's total gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to reach 50 billion yuan in 2012 by growing 26.4 percent annually. The output value of its energy and chemical industries are expected to then hit 25.5 billion yuan, increasing by 23 percent annually.

  Dongsheng district

The central urban area of the booming industrial city of Ordos will emphasize development of the service industry, aiming to build itself into a regional financial and logistics center.

At the same time it will continue to enhance its core industries of coal mining and cashmere production. The district also plans to boost growth in the auto parts manufacturing industry, a newly emerging sector.

It is expected that the district's GDP will reach 60 billion yuan in 2012. Per capita GDP is projected by then to reach 36,000 yuan, among the highest in China's western regions.

  Etuoke banner

Etuoke's economic strengths lie in its agriculture, animal husbandry and coal mining.

The banner plans to develop more highly efficient agriculture and animal husbandry while using its rich coal resources to fire a number of power generating plants.

It projects its GDP will reach 30 billion yuan in 2012.

  Etuoke front banner

In addition to its rich coal resources, Etuoke front banner - another organizational term used since ancient times - boasts bounteous natural gas and petroleum reserves. Energy and chemicals are projected to be the driving force for its future development.

The banner has built the Shanghaimiao Energy and Chemical Industry Park to house its mainstay industries, which is a major destination for investment from home and abroad.

The banner's GDP is projected to hit 10 billion yuan in 2010, the 30th anniversary of the banner.

  Hangjin banner

Hangjin has advantages in its energy, chemical and farming industries. The local government plans to pay more attention to building the socialist new countryside through promoting efficient and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Its GDP is projected to hit 15 billion yuan in 2012, while per capita net income of farmers is expected to reach 15,000 yuan in the same year.

  Ushen banner

Ushen has one of the largest natural gas reserves among all county-sized areas of China. Its annual output is expected to hit 15 billion cu m in 2012.

Using its rich natural gas and coal resources, the banner plans to build itself into an important energy, chemical and new material production base in Inner Mongolia.

Its GDP is projected to reach 31 billion yuan in 2012, with an annual growth of more than 30 percent.

    Ejin Horo banner

Home to the Genghis Khan Mausoleum, Ejin Horo is considered a sacred land by many Mongolian people.

Millions travel to the banner to pay homage to Genghis Khan each year, so local authorities are determined to develop the area into one of the top tourism destinations in Inner Mongolia as well as north China.

Boosted by the rapidly growing tourism industry and other sectors like coal mining, the banner's GDP is expected to reach 50 billion yuan in 2012, a two-fold increase over 2007.

     Jungar banner

Jungar is the industrial hub of Ordos, with strengths in energy, chemicals, manufacturing, logistics and tourism. Its ambition is to enter the top 50 list of China's county-level areas.

The banner expects its GDP to reach 80 billion yuan in 2012, growing by 23.7 percent annually.
